Tokyo to Kyoto by Train: A Packing List for Walking Days and Hotel Changes
Pack for Tokyo and Kyoto with a transfer-friendly clothing list, easy-access train essentials, and a realistic hotel laundry plan.
For Tokyo and Kyoto, pack a repeatable walking wardrobe, manageable main luggage, and a day bag with easy access to train-day essentials. Match clothing quantities to a confirmed laundry plan.
You will probably notice your luggage most on the days between hotels. Not when it is open beside the bed, but when you need your ticket, want a drink, and are working out which way to go without blocking anyone's path.
For a Tokyo-to-Kyoto city trip, good packing is partly about clothing and partly about access. A manageable main bag and a modest day bag often do more useful work than a collection of specialist travel accessories.
The trip this list covers
Assume ten days and nine hotel nights split between Tokyo and Kyoto, one main intercity transfer, walking and public transport, and no ski trip or mountain trek. Plan one machine wash after day five, completed before day six. Clothing counts include what you wear in transit. If you extend to two weeks, schedule another wash; if laundry is unavailable, increase clean clothing rather than assuming hand-washing will solve everything.
Choose fabrics and warmth for your actual dates. This is a city itinerary, not a year-round weather prescription. Check both destinations near departure and adjust layers rather than packing a separate wardrobe for each city.
Start with the transfer, not a bag brand
Measure your current luggage, including handles and wheels where relevant, and check the operating rail service's current rules before reserving seats. JNTO notes that some shinkansen services require large-baggage space reservations. Do not assume an airline cabin-bag label settles train arrangements. JNTO's transport and luggage guidance.
A roller may be the comfortable choice for you. A backpack may work well for another traveler. Consider the complete station-to-hotel route, accessible entrances, lifts, and any assistance you need. The objective is a workable transfer, not proving that you can carry everything on your back.
Quantity-aware base checklist
- 6 tops, covering five days plus a clean buffer before the planned wash.
- 3 bottoms, chosen for repeat wear and easy combinations.
- 6 sets of underwear and 6 pairs of socks.
- 2–3 support garments as needed for your own rotation.
- 1 set of sleepwear; add a second if your comfort or laundry timing calls for it.
- 1 tested walking-shoe pair, plus a second only for a clear comfort or activity need.
- 1 warm layer and 1 weather-appropriate outer layer as conditions require.
- 1 main bag and 1 day bag that holds daily essentials without becoming a second suitcase.
- Phone, charger, cable, and compatible adapter if required by your devices.
- Travel documents, tickets or reservation details, payment methods, and saved accommodation addresses.
- Toiletries and personal-care supplies for ten days, adjusted to confirmed hotel provision.
- Personal medicines, vision supplies, accessibility equipment, and their necessary accessories.
- 1 worn-clothes bag and a simple laundry plan including opening hours, cost, and drying.
- Bottle, tissues, and sun or rain protection appropriate to the day.
Keep one outfit that works for the dinner you actually booked. That may be ordinary trousers and a shirt already on the list. A different restaurant every night does not require a different wardrobe every night.
The train-day pocket of your trip
Before leaving the hotel, put documents, tickets, phone, payment, personal essentials, water, and a removable layer in the day bag. Keep your next hotel's address and check-in details accessible. Add a snack if useful for your journey and personal needs. Store the main bag as directed and keep aisles and doors clear.
Do not bury all charging equipment in the main suitcase if you need your phone for onward directions. A familiar pouch can group cable and charger without a new organizer. Conversely, do not carry the whole toiletry kit around Kyoto because it never came out of the transfer bag.
Four modules to consider
Activity: For venue visits, check the named site's requirements and choose comfortable coverage or easy-to-remove footwear where requested. A booked hiking day needs a separate route assessment, not just the city list with a water bottle added.
Season: Substitute insulation for cold dates and lighter clothing for hot ones. Add wet-weather protection when the forecast calls for it. An additional fresh top can be more useful than another jacket if your expected days are warm and active.
Accommodation: Confirm laundry, detergent, dryers, towels, and luggage storage with each hotel. If you use luggage forwarding, confirm collection, delivery, destination acceptance, and exclusions. JNTO describes forwarding as an available option, not an identical service at every property. Keep essentials and enough clothing for the confirmed interval, plus a reasonable buffer. Personal needs: Protect the space for familiar shoes, size-dependent clothing, assistive devices, and supplies you cannot easily replace. Arrange assistance around your needs rather than making the packing list an obstacle.
Own, borrow, or buy a genuine gap
| Job | Already own | Borrow/rent | Shop only for the gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main luggage | Check your roller or backpack | Trial a suitable spare | Fit, handling, and booked limits matter more than branding |
| Daily carrying | Use your everyday bag | Borrow before buying | Avoid excess empty weight and awkward access |
| Organization | Reuse two pouches | No rental needed | Skip a cube set if finding things is already easy |
Leave expedition equipment, multiple dinner shoes, and spare electronics without a defined use at home. A smaller bag is helpful only if it still contains what you need. Any retailer purchase is a separate transaction with that retailer, not a bundled TravelGear order.
