Summer program
One checked bag and one carry-on, however long you stay. Rooms are small and there is laundry, so two weeks of clothes is plenty. Spain has pharmacies and Zara. Pack what is annoying to replace the first week.

Semester
A semester sees fall, winter, and a visa appointment. One checked bag and one carry-on for the term; buy the extra layers there once you know the flat. Pack two weeks of clothes and the paperwork you cannot replace at Zara.
